Smuggler's Self Portrait

In the globalized world, what does it mean to be a smuggler? That probably depends on the priorities of who’s answering the question. Davor Sanvincenti has created a series of nesting dolls in this exhibition: creating a (priceless) work of art which was then transported across the international borders between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The entire journay was documented, including the respective encounters with customs officials or border patrols, with the intent of exhibit the documentation in the Pocket Gallery: a Dadaist operation which was intended to focus upon issues of borders, the value of art, globalization, etc..
But of all the material produced during the smuggler’s journey, those which spoke most exactly to the sentiments of someone on the other side of the border – or someone who was about to cross it – were the original photographs. They are classic images: carefully composed black and white landscapes; dignified and melancholy. This is one aspect of globalization which is less spectacular, but by no means less essential..

Autoritratto di un Contrabbandiere

Nel mondo della globalizzazione, cosa significa il contrabbando? Beh, dipende sulle priorità di chi ne risponde. Davor Sanvincenti ha fatto un opera a scattole cinese; creando un’opera (di inestimabile valore) da essere trasportato attraverso le frontiere tra Croazia ed Italia. Tutto il tragitto, con le relative dinamiche di dogana, sono stato documentati, con l’intento di esporli nella Pocket Gallery: un operazione burlesca per mettere a fuoco discorsi di frontiere, valore, globalizzazione ecc. Ma da tutto il materiale prodotto nel percorso di contrabbando, quello che parlava più esattamente della sensazione di chi sta al di là del frontiere - o che sta per attraversarla – erano le foto originali. Sono imagini classici: paesaggi in bianco e nero, di composizione e compostezza malinconica. Un aspetto meno plateale, ma per niente meno essenziale della globalizazzione.
